Palm Acid Oil

Palm Acid Oil (PAO) is a by-product derived from the chemical refining of crude palm oil (CPO). Characterized by its high free fatty acid (FFA) content—typically between 50% and 90%—PAO is a semi-solid, dark brown material with a strong odor. Although it is not suitable for human consumption, it holds significant commercial value across several non-food sectors.

In industrial settings, PAO is widely used in the manufacture of laundry soap and detergents, where its high FFA content is ideal for the saponification process. It is also a cost-effective energy source in the animal feed industry, particularly for livestock and poultry. Additionally, PAO serves as an increasingly popular feedstock in biodiesel production, though pre-treatment is often required to reduce acidity and remove impurities. Other uses include grease formulation, rubber processing, and the production of various oleochemicals.
